Portraits of Essex
Through interviews and portraiture with different women and non-binary people with a relationship to Essex, I'm collecting stories of what it means to be an ‘Essex Girl’.
This project is part of Kickstarter's socially engaged practice mentorship programme. So at some point, soon, I'll be crowdfunding to help me share these stories far and wide.
There is no one way to be from any place. But the connotations surrounding the Essex girl stereotype leave both those that do and don’t fit it in difficult positions. Both groups should be celebrated. With this, I want to carve a place in local history for a realistic depiction of the complexities of gender, class and place, and open up discussions on who we allow each other to be.
